Default club news 20-06-2010

The big event for a number from the club this weekend was the Mountain Mayhem the original British 24hr event we had two teams riding in the open class which contained well over a hundred teams, James,Steve and Ian plus a guest did a great ride and were battling for the final podium place all through the event and eventually finished a magnificent 5th,the other team of Stu, Si, Phil and Ben also finished but at time of going to press the full results were not up.Elsewhere Martin T haves been starting to creep up the placings in the youth class at Hillingdon as he gets his head round road racing whilst Martin B took 9th in the Shred evening series.

On the social front there were a couple from the club doing the London to Brighton so hopefully they had a good day out and also a few went out to Aston Hill for a blast.

Looking ahead to this week Monday is club night at The Crown, if anyone wants any club kit brought down let me know.

Wed it is the big one the knobbly tyres 10 a fun 10 mile time trial on mountain bikes around a road circuit followed by a celebratory curry at Tiger Cubs where prizes and trophies will be handed out.So far we have about 30 riders taking part, it is free to enter the curry will be subsidised slightly so what more do you want , let me know if your coming

Meet at a pub called the Stag & Hounds on the Wexham Road, near to Slough at 7 p.m. you can park there or in the road near-by, if you check the forum out there are full details of the course already posted up. I will be taking the club van loaded with prizes and trophies from my house at about 6:15 if anyone needs a lift.

Thursday there is road training at Hillingdon 6:30 p.m.

Sat Colin is planning a long road ride for anyone interested and Sunday I am hoping to have another trip to Bordon to check out our cct for the Southern MTB Series, this will be confirmed after club night and Wed so watch the forum.

For those that are watching the club site Jackie is doing a deal on cheap Specialized inner tubes -post up if you want any

A couple of important dates for club events are coming up

July 3rd P.M. Club BBQ at a great venue on the river , free boat trips, mainly off road ride from the Uxbridge area to the venue, leaving about 2p.m. for a 4p.m. start for the BBQ, the club will provide the meat just need to bring a salad/desert and all the drink you are going to consume, this is a very sociable occasion , partners/kids welcome but one again I do need to know anticipated numbers so post up.

11th July We promote our round of the Southern MTB Series at Bordon hopefully as usual we will see a lot of club riders taking part and if your not riding we always need help with running the event so get in touch if you want more details.

July 23/24th 12//24hr Still need a fastish lady to join Sarah, Rachael, Cat & Abbi, Andreas,Peter and Chris S are looking for 1 rider in their 12hr team, Jon P and Adrian wanted to make up a vets team but need a few more riders if anyone over 30 and is feeling fast.Post up on the forum if interested

August 20th French day trip - Due to a number of people not being able to make it the date has been moved to the 20th August for the French day trip, being a Friday hopefully people can get the day off easier than a mid week date, the plan is as always to drive down to Dover go over as foot passengers spend a very relaxed day in the Calais area riding along the coast on mostly off road trails -nothing to technical before a late evening return to Blightly- post up if interested.

Oct 1st-5th Oct Scottish trip, looking at leaving either Fri p.m. 1st Oct or sat early a.m. 2 Oct to ride as many of the trails around the Glentress area with the idea of coming back Tuesday the 5th, Costs are N/K at present and will be dependent on numbers and what sort of Digs we can book up so post up if keen .

Last but not least lots of club clothing in stock if you want any get in touch and will check I have your size in stock

Cheers Chris

Full results are now up.

Stephen, James, Ian and Chris - 5th of 152 teams
Ben, Stu, Phil and Si - 30th of 152

Toughest 24hr course I have ridden. Not really suited to the vast majority of entrants who, I would imagine, signed up expecting a course they could actually ride. Within three laps most people were walking the climbs and some of the single track. This made passing a real issue.

For our team, Ian and Chris were the star performers. Super fast times and very consistent. Stephen and I were somewhat slower but maintained the consistent theme. In the end it was our ability to have solid laps throughout that seperated us from sixth and seventh places.

For all its grandeous pomp, MM is not a patch on Twentyfour12. Too commercial and not enough real atmosphere. The timing system was frankly a mess and had it rained the course would have been horrendous. Also, and there is some self interest here...to only go three deep on the podium when you have a field of 152 is pretty poor IMO. It is a spectacle but I do think they need to evaluate what they are about and ring in some changes.

Having said that, impressive riding from all the Beyond/WDMBC riders.

I agree with James, first time I've not seen prizes down to 5th.

At least we got a decent course, which as James said wasn't really suited to the majority of entrants and would have proved catastrophic had it rained. I don't think I've ever seen the ambulance used so many times in an event.

Well done and thanks to both teams and helpers. Great atmosphere in the wdmbc pit area, lots of trash talking etc,
